Frequency of the more common Balloon and Airship Stereocards on Ebay

A great many cards change hands on Ebay, so their value and scarcity can be assessed objectively.  Many balloon and airship views come up too infrequently for scarcity statistics to be significant.  Some however are very common.  Selected Balloon/Airship stereocards which have appeared more than twelve times are in the table below.  Each Entry has Number Sold (n) and Average price ($)

I have price information for all LTA stereocards traded on Ebay since January 2000. Email me if you need to know.

2007 Comment (January 2008): The mid-range cards have fallen in price.
The truly rare end of the market (not in this table) remains firm. The most common cards are steady simply because sellers understandably do not sell at a very low prices - a lot of these go unsold. There are bargains to be had. Someone had a bargain from me (a scarce Troutman card - sold for the opening bid)

Cards where sellers do not accept non-US bids DO REALISE A LOWER PRICE.
(One seller in 2007 refused my 'forrin' bid, and sold his scarce card for about 1/10 of the price it should have gone for.
My loss as well as his!!)

All the more common cards were published by Keystone (although some started life as U&U images).

Table showing number of cards presented for sale on Ebay for balloon/Airship cards where 12 or more examples came up between January 2000 and December 2007. Data are:  Number Sold, Mean Price in Dollars.

Keystone V series cards are made from Underwood and Underwood negatives after that company was acquired by Keystone. For these cards, the Keystone V and U&U versions are counted in together.

Minor variations are treated as being the same card.

Comments from Previous Years.....

January 2006: I got the feeling while compiling these statistics that both numbers of cards and prices realised were falling. This is not borne out by the data! Numbers show some variation both up and down, as do prices. Some real bargains were available in 2004, and the more common observation balloon views in particular took a tumble.
January 2004 Comment: Prices for the more common cards show a falling trend. Where the averages have increased, they have been affected by a single extraordinary bid. This has happened several times in 2003, with the odd card selling for more than ten times the going rate.
January 2003: Overall, LTA cards do not seem to be becoming scarcer or pricier. Prices where given are the average successful final bid price for that card. Unsold cards are on average priced a little higher (ie too high to attract bids), but some very high realised bids (eg $34.44 for Keystone 18000) do affect the averages for the sold cards (ie most sell for less than the average - the mode is less than the mean). Copies of Keystone 18000 for instance went unsold at $2 or less on three occasions in 2002. The number of balloon cards vs airship cards _does_ seem to be declining.
