Airships In 3D Stereocards.

This page contains images of airships other than those produced by the Zeppelin Company. (well, except for the ZR3) They are presented in chronological order (to the best of my knowledge :*)

Baldwin3.jpg

Baldwin's Airship October 25, 1904

International View Co.

This is the 'California Arrow' at the St Louis Worlds Fair, 1904. Standing in the keel is the 29 year-old Roy Knabenshue, standing in as pilot for Captain  (Later Major) Thomas Baldwin (54) , who had apparently put on too much weight to fly on this occasion.

Francois.jpg

HCWhite 2602 'Francois Airship about to ascend for a flight, Louisiana purchase exhibition, St Louis USA'

This card is ©1905, but the version reproduced in the Keystone 'Airplanes' series dates the flight as 1904. which fits in with the date of the exhibition. The same negative was published by  'Perfec' Stereograph. The airship was christened Ville de Saint Mandé, but was known as the Prosper-Lambert airship at St Louis. The hangar can just be seen to the rear of the view

baldwin in flight

Underwood and Underwood 11078 'The Baldwin Dirigible Airship in flight'.

Airship 'The Baldwin'.
This card was reproduced in the Keystone 'Airplanes' series. Most likely Baldwin's 'Army No. 1' Airship.

Thanks!!

Italian M1

Italian Semi-rigid Airship M.1.

Prototype of the M-Series airships of which 20 were built. This image is from the Turkish-Italian War in which Tripoli was annexed. The airship first flew in 1912, which is also the copyright date on this card. The card is a lithograph :*(

r34mineola

Keystone V19216 'Through the uncharted heavens she blazed the trail - "Blimp" R34 at Minneola.'

A Great posed shot. The most common Airship card, and it was NOT a blimp! The R34, modelled on the Zeppelin L33, visited Mineola 6-9 July 1919. At the time there was no shed large enough to accommodate it in the United States.

LZ126 Los Angeles

Keystone 17398. 'ZR-3 arriving in the US from Germany.'

Originally LZ-126, then ZR-3 'Los Angeles' (from November 1924), made in Germany for the US. Delivered October 1924

LZ126 Los Angeles

Keystone 17397 'ZR3 Entering the Hangar at Lakehurst, N. J.'

Included in the Keystone 'Airplanes' series.

Shenandoah + ZR3

Keystone 17402 'The Shenandoah and the ZR3 side by side in the hangar.'

This image is reproduced in the 'Viewmaster' Airplanes set - which is easier to trace than the Keystone Stereoview version

Shenadoah + ZR3

Keystone 17403 'Giant Zeppelin ZR3 overhead - Shenandoah at right, in hangar, Lakehurst N.J.'

(separated from 17402 by the time it takes to walk the length of the hangar!)

ZRS-4, USS AKRON. Built 1931 by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Company in Akron Ohio USA. Extensively photographed for Keystone and on his own behalf by local stereophotographer Lynn Skeels throughout the construction. However, none of the many images seem to be very common. Below is a sequence of five views.

Akron frame 1

Keystone 32738 'Close View, from Within Framework, of Supporting Girders of ZRS-4 (U.S.S.Akron)'

This view also appears in a 'flat' version (two identical views) in the Keystone EyeTest Series

Akron Frame 2

Keystone 32740 'Inside the framework of the ZRS-4 (U.S.S. Akron) during Construction. Akron, Ohio.'

Akron Frame 3

Keystone 32739 'Nose of Framework of ZRS-4 (U.S.S. Akron) from Inside of Hangar'

(not rare)

Akron Skin 1

Keystone 32763 'As Our Photographer Saw the Akron, the ZRS-4 on July 29, Just Eleven Days before It Will Be Launched.'

(Scarce) 1931

Akron Skin 2

Keystone  32745 'A Bow View of the Zeppelin Akron Showing the Outer Covering, Akron, Ohio.'

(not rare)

Akron Maiden Flight

Keystone 32771. The maiden Flight of the USS Akron.

Sept. 23rd 1931

An amateur view of the German semi-rigid airship Parseval-Naatz PN 30. Sponsored by Odol (toothpaste), over the Tegelersee near Berlin. The Odol airship first flew in 1932, though it appears considerably more modern, with the rigid keel covered.

Keystone 33072 'A small modern Goodyear blimp in flight, A Century of Progress Exposition'
The Chicago 'Century of Progress' Exhibition was in 1933

Now that's a Blimp! (see "Blimp" R34 at Minneola.' above)

Kroger Blimp

Walton 2177 'Kroger Blimp' (named Spirit of Atlanta)
Georgia USA October 1996
I think this is an American Blimp Corporation Lightship A60.

Bill Walton is one of the USA's foremost creators of contemporary stereocards, and author of the 3D book 'Back to Basics'. You can find a biography on-line, but if you are a member of the National Stereoscopic Association or of Photo-3D, then you'll know of him already.
